What kinds of materials are in the UW-Madison Archives?

Our collections are limited to items relating directly to the University, where we collect original source documents from administrative offices and from faculty and staff. The Archives has the Daily Cardinal, the Badger yearbook, minutes of the Regents and the Faculty Senate, course catalogs, timetables and directories of students and staff. There are subject and correspondence files from University presidents, chancellors, deans, department chairs and other administrators, as well as faculty committees, papers of faculty members, and University budgets. The Archives also collects material that document the development of affiliated groups and organizations such as student and staff organizations and societies. The majority of the collection is cataloged in Madcat, the University's online catalog.

Genealogical holdings

The Archives may have genealogical information on former faculty, staff and students. If your ancestor was not connected to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, we do not have any information about them. We do not have primary source documents but have a wide selection of secondary source material. See the Quick Guide to Genealogical Holdings of UW-Madison Archives, available in the Archives. Please contact the WISCONSIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY, located on Library Mall at 816 State Street for primary source material on residents of Wisconsin and other genealogical collections.

The Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research

The WCFTR is co-sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Wisconsin Historical Society. This collection is located at the Wisconsin Historical Society, NOT at UW-Madison Archives. In addition to housing the Center's collections, the Society holds extensive complementary documentation in its own historically significant mass communications collections. All film, photo and manuscripts collections held by the WCFTR and the Society's Visual Materials Archive can be consulted through the Wisconsin Historical Society's Archives Division. The Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research is one of the world's major archives of research materials relating to the entertainment industry.
