Tape 4/Side 2, 192- :
Comparing men and women in the years I was here at Wisconsin, it always
seemed to me that professors were--leaned over backwards to help [women],
the majority of the professors. There were a few who didn't think that
a woman should be doing this or that or the next thing, but most of them
leaned over backwards and were particularly proud when a woman would do
well. I thought there was great academic support for women.
We had all kinds of customs and regulations that meant women could not
do some of the things that men could do and were, I think, censored more
for it in their dormitories and in their sororities and so on. There were
limits on them, but as far as their progress on the campus, young women
had every opportunity and were encouraged to do what they could do.
