Abstract: Professor Carayon was born in Marseille , France and received her first two degrees in Industrial Engineering from Ecole Centrale de Paris. Her Ph.D was awarded in 1988 from the University of Wisconsin - Madison . She discusses her research in ergonomics and job design in relationship to productivity. Professor Carayon is currently doing research involving human factors and ergonomics in health care and patient safety and is associate director of the AHRQ T32 training grant to the UW Population Health Sciences department for “Ph.D Training in Population Health & Quality Improvement.” In 1995 Professor Carayon returned to France for four years and was on the faculty of the Ecole des Mines de Nancy, France. She discusses the challenges she encountered while there.

He spoke of the time period of the late 1960s/early 1970s to the present. Abstract: Eileen Hanneman began as a Typist in the Institute for Environmental Studies in 1973. Before that she attended Luther College , Decorah , Iowa where she studied music. Ms. Hanneman worked under several directors of the Institute beginning as a Typist (classified staff title) with Reid Bryson. She was promoted to departmental secretary, administrative program specialist, and in 1993 became assistant director. She discusses her various responsibilities including budget matters, human resources and grants administration. Ms. Hanneman also talks about her committee work on campus involving women and child care issues. In 2006 she received the Martha Casey Academic Staff Award for Dedication to Excellence. In her interview she talks about that experience. This interview was conducted for inclusion in the UW-Madison Oral History Program.

Abstract: Dr. Akbar Ally began his career in the UW-Madison Graduate School working in student affairs for Dean Robert Bock. His primary area of responsibility was the recruitment and retention of minority students. In 1989 he became Special Assistant to Provost David Ward and continued to specialize in programs for minority and disadvantaged students. Dr. Ally discusses the turbulence at the time created by minority students and other campus activists who were working to change the campus environment. From the turbulence Chancellor Donna Shalala introduced the Madison Plan. Dr. Ally played a major role in the implementation of the Madison Plan. When David Ward became Chancellor Dr. Ally continued his work in the Provost’s office under John Wiley and retired as an assistant vice chancellor in 2002. Also covered in the interview is Dr. Ally’s childhood growing up in British Guyana. He shares information on how the U.S. government funded his college education at St. Lawrence University in New York . He earned his PhD in urban studies at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee .
