Abstract: In his June 2007 interviews with Bob Lange, Gerald Marwell discussion his youth, education, career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison , and retirement. Marwell primarily discussed the period of 1960-2005 on the following topics: his work in experimental sociology, the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam era student protests, and his thoughts on teaching. He also comments on UW administration and his thoughts on the future direction of the university. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the UW—Madison Oral History Program.

Van Deburg talked about his experience as a white student and teacher in Black Studies departments. Abstract: Professor of History, William Courtenay, recorded his interview on July 19 th, 20 th, and 27 th, 2007. His interview gives an overview of his childhood in Neenah , WI and Nashville , TN. The bulk of the interview is devoted to his higher education at Vanderbilt, Princeton , and Harvard, and his career and research at the University of Wisconsin . Courtenay also comments on the university leadership under which he has worked. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the UW-Madison Oral History Program.

Abstract: In his July/August 2007 with Bob Lange, Donald Downs reflected on his formatted years at Cornell University and his career in political science at UW-Madison since 1985. Downs discussed the 1968 takeover of Willard Straight Hall at Cornell, his views on free speech and academic/intellectual freedom, and how these views led to founding the Faculty Committee for Academic Freedom and Rights (CAFAR). One prominent topic are the UW speech codes. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the UW—Madison Oral History Program.

Abstract: In his four July/August 2007 interviews with Troy Reeves, Jack Mitchell detailed his thoughts and memories of his time at UW—Madison. Mitchell spoke of the time period of the 1940s through 2007 and on the follow topics: National Public Radio, All Things Considered, Wisconsin Public Radio, and the UW— Madison Journalism School. Mitchell also offered his opinions on how Madison and UW— Madison has changed between the 1970s and today. Mitchell also discuss his pre-UW Madison career, including one year in Madison as a reporter for WHA-AM, his childhood, undergraduate work, and radio gigs in Michigan, and his one-year fellowship at the British Broadcasting Corporation. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the UW—Madison Oral History Program.

Abstract: In his three interviews with Vicki Tobias, conducted during summer 2007, Professor Emeritus Donald Reeder detailed his professional career as a Physics professor and department chair for the UW-Madison Physics department. He briefly touched on his childhood and early education, as it influenced his career direction, but mostly discussed his academic career spanning the late 1950s to present. He discussed the following topics: history of Physics department at UW-Madison; national and international physics laboratories including SLAC, CERN, DESY, FERMI, and others; the Compact Muon Solenoide (Detector) project; the Atomic Energy Council (AEC); US Department of Energy laboratory, Argonne; development of the bubble chamber and its importance to the field; campus life in the late 1950s through 1970; Sterling Hall bombing in 1972; and key physicists at both UW-Madison and other institutions such as Converse (Connie) Blanchard, Ugo Camerini, Al Erwin, William (Jack) Fry, Bud Goode, Willy Haeberli, and Herb Ray.

Abstract: Professor William Berg of French and Italian had 5 interview sessions (August 21; September 18, 19, 25, and 26, 2007) for a total of 8.5 hours. His is an extremely comprehensive interview focusing on his 40 years at the UW, 1967 to present. He gave a detailed history of the Department of French and Italian, citing a number of professors who have built the department. He also covered teaching, his research, the distinction between scholarship and textbook preparation, the importance of French House, and quite a bit on faculty governance. He expresses his concerns about funding for the UW. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the UW-Madison Oral History Program.
