Tape 1/Side 1, 055- :

Having myself written a book on the social ideas of American educators, I had got interested in the history of higher education, and I felt that most of the histories of colleges and universities had been written without any context. They had been institutional histories, and I decided sometime I would like to try my hand at writing the history of a university and to put it in terms of context. So when I got to Wisconsin in 1942, I began to hear about the Centennial, which was coming up in 1948. And it occurred to me that I might suggest to them the writing of a centennial history of the University, and this met with a good response.
